mexico city exploring and chapultepec forest
Morning all! We're getting our steps in today and starting our first full day with a walking tour around the city. First up we'll head to Paseo de la Reforma to see the sidewalk which gets covered in colourful skulls every year. Here we'll get a true sense of just how big this celebration is - the Mexican locals go ALL OUT and we love to see it! Next up we're leading with our stomachs and heading over to San Juan market where we'll try fresh local fruits and "pan de muerto" (aka dead bread) which is traditionally eaten throughout the festival. Throughout the day we'll pass loads of beautiful ofrendas which are alters set up to honour the memory of passed loved ones and welcome them back home. It is an incredible, poignant festival and we are SO lucky to experience it first-hand! We'll also walk through Chapultepec Forest which is one of the largest parks in the city. After a busy first day exploring we'll head for some dinner and try some more local food - tacos anyone?
xochimilco exploring
Next up is Xochimilco! This is a suburb just south of Mexico City and it's a must-visit during the Day of the Dead celebrations. Whilst we are here we'll jump on one of the famous colourful boats and travel along the river to explore more of this amazing city. Would it be a Day of the Dead trip if we didn't visit a cemetery?! Learn how the locals respect their loved ones who are no longer here and see how they celebrate their lives. In the evening we'll head out for some food and get an early night ready for the big day tomorrow!
day of the dead parade
Today's the day! It's the official Day of the Dead! Today we will get to experience the Parade in ALL its glory and watch the floats and festivities go by. It's a busy day and before we get stuck into it it's only right that we dress the part and get our faces painted. We'll spend the morning getting ready and then in the afternoon we'll head into the city to join the festivities. In the evening we'll head out for dinner to debrief today's wonderful madness and share all the photos we've taken!
Please note: The date of the parade will be announced nearer the time but we anticipate it to fall on this day for 2025.
coyoacan and market exploring
Today is the last full day of the Day of the Dead celebrations and we're going all out! We'll get up early and head out to Coyoacan which is famous for being the historic centre of Mexico City. Today you will have a chance to visit Museo Frida Kahlo which is a great addition to your trip if you fancy learning more about the iconic artist. If that's not your thing then just wandering around this area will be super cool. It will be lively with community ofrendas, street performances, and bustling markets - the perfect place for us to spend our last full day in Mexico City. In the evening we'll head out for our final meal as a group and share our highlights from this short but sweet trip!
