Auckland: Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves
Auckland might be your first stop in New Zealand, but make sure you don’t just stick to the city! After a couple of days spent getting over your jet lag and soaking in the atmosphere of NZ, jump on a bus or hire a car and explore the surrounding areas. Hobbiton is a MUST when you are in New Zealand. Even if you aren't a fan of films, a visit to Middle-earth (that's the fantasy land FYI) is still well worth the trip. Wander through the rolling green hills of The Shire, learn about the amazing set and snap a few pics in front of Bilbo Baggins’ door to send to your parents! It's a perfect day for everyone, even those who don't know their hobbit from their hobnob. Another top place 'nearby' to Auckland is Waitomo Caves. You probably haven't heard of them but once you've heard about them you'll add it straight to your bucket list! In these caves, glowworms light up a cave like a starry sky! It's like something out of a Disney movie...hop on a boat and drift through the underground caverns of Waitomo while thousands of tiny bioluminescent creatures put on a natural light show.
Rotorua: Geothermal Goodness & Redwoods Magic
Depending on how deep into New Zealand research you are, you might not have come across Rotura yet! It's still a bit of a hidden gem but we would say for sure that Rotorua is not to be missed. It's got bubbling geothermal activity, cultural experiences, and some of the most stunning landscapes in New Zealand. First up on any itinerary in Rotura has to be Redwoods Forest. This amazing area gives major enchanted-forest vibes - again think Disney film! Once you have walked through the amazing Forest it's time to hit up some of the many Geothermal wonders nearby. Geysers, hot pools, and bubbling mud baths? Yes, please! Relaxing - tick, nature - tick all that's left now is to get some culture. Look no further than a night of Māori traditions. Rotorua is the best place to experience Māori Culture, from amazing haka performances to a delicious hangi feast an evening in their company is unforgettable and it will be one of your highlights in New Zealand for sure!
Taupō – Waterfalls, Hot Springs & Adventure
Taupō is all about lakeside relaxation and outdoor adventures. You'll have probably got the idea by now that New Zealand's nature is really something special. We can't think of many places on earth where there is such diverse and breathtaking nature in such a small area (fun fact: New Zealand is only slightly bigger than the United Kingdom!) Huka Falls is a must-visit in Taupō, in this epic series of waterfalls 220,000 litres of water per second thunders down and it's LOUD! Otumuheke Stream & Spa Thermal Park is also the perfect place to relax and become one with nature. It’s the perfect spot to chill after a day of adventuring. Want to see EVEN more water? Well, what about the star of the show Taupō? THE LAKE! Enjoy the lake on a kayak or just sit back and soak in the epic views.
Christchurch – A City Rebuilt & Ready to Explore
Ready to discover the second-largest city on the southern Island? When you are here check out the Botanic Gardens, wander through the beautiful gardens and then head over to see some of the amazing local street art and markets. Foodies will LOVE Christchurch with its amazing selection of street food, local restaurants and cracking nightlife too!
Queenstown – The Adventure Capital
Saving the best for last? Welcome to Queenstown! This is where thrill-seekers, nature lovers, and party-goers all unite for the ultimate New Zealand experience. If you are looking for a place to bungy jump - this is it! Kawarau Bridge or The Remarkables are two fan favourites for jumping and skydiving (quite frankly we're happy with our feet FIRMLY on the ground...but you do you!) After days filled with adrenaline-pumping activities, get ready to refuel with a legendary Fergburger (IYKYK) and check out the lively bars that make Queenstown one of the best places to party in New Zealand.
So...there you go! Here are our top suggestions for places to visit in New Zealand. There is so much to see and do in this amazing country but these you can't skip! Happy planning - oh and if you don't want to plan - how about checking out something BIG on 26th Feb....you can thank us later...
